KYOTO, JAPAN
834 MIBU is a historic Machiya town house. We have attempted to retain the old features such as the stairs, windows and some walls. Some of the windows are single glazed and original glass. Due to the age of the building nothing is straight and there are small air gaps to the outside. On very windy evenings the downstairs windows may rattle. The steps are very steep and the rocks at the base of the stairs are uneven. We have retained some of the old walls which we feel are charming however others may find them dirty. They are original Shikkui walls and are organic. The natural antimicrobial feature of Shikkui disinfects the air from microbes. Some of the walls in the house are also thin and it is appreciated if you do not lean on them. Our neighborhood is very silent, we ask that you respect this atmosphere. We have also taken care to use original Sudare blinds, some guests may find that they do not block enough light out or that they perhaps do not block the view entirely to the street. The main area to sit is on Tatami with Zaisu chairs and Zabuton pillows. On certain evenings you may hear different individuals dragging a metal walking stick around the streets, this is a traditional neighborhood watch.
